Break the Silence is a registered charity and company limited by guarantee, established in 2004 by Founder, Kate Short, a Survivor of childhood sexual abuse.

Although Kate retired from Break the Silence in 2015, she remains a specialist advisor to our Board of Trustees and still follows the progress of the organisation she founded in order to help others.

The charity is governed by a Board of Trustees, responsible for the overall management and strategic direction of the charity. The Board comprises of a mixture of both clinical and business expertise and Survivors have representation at Board level. In addition, we have a number of sub-groups and specialist advisors that can be called upon as and when their area of expertise is required.

Alison Tait

Chief Executive

On the retirement of Founder Kate Short, Alison Tait took up the role of Chief Executive. A business professional with previous management experience of a global charity, Alison has been involved with Break the Silence since inception, retiring from the Board of Trustees in order to accept the role of Chief Executive.

Alison supports a dedicated and passionate Team of staff who in their individual roles contribute both to the development and growth of the charity and to provide support and opportunities to Survivors of rape and childhood sexual abuse.

Sharon Belshaw

Clinical Lead

Responsible for Clinical Team and all Clinical Services, Sharon has a range of varied and relevant clinical experience working within public sector, private sector, education and consultancy environments. Member of BACP and BPS.

Relevant Qualifications: Pg Dip Person Centred Counselling, Pg Cert in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, BSc Hons. Psychology, Qualified Hypnotherapist and NLP Practitioner. Trained in EMDR.Currently working towards Chartered Counselling Psychologist status with QCoP.

Lesley Craig

Head of Income Generation

Responsible for Income Generation Activities, Lesley has previous experience both in the private and third sector. Previous experience includes charity management, trusts/foundation fundraising, project management, development and sustainability. Member of the Institute of Fundraising.

Relevant Qualifications: Institute of Fundraising Certificate/Diploma in Managing Fundraising, Institute of Fundraising Certificate in Fundraising Practice, European Framework of Quality Management Accredited Assessor, CPD Certificate in Best Practice Consultations, SVE/EVOC Training for Advisors of Small Charities.
